Deceased 7/7-7/8. (likely overnight). Was OK 7/7 am, looked gawdawful 7/7 pm. Threw the kitchen sink at her for suspect enterotoxemia, and did not survive. She was huge, healthy, growthy (was 75lbs at 4 mon or so), and my dream kid from this cross. Between her loss, and that of her mother the same season from probably same disease, my french alpine breeding plans have been absolutely devastated. I feel like I’ve gone backwards a decade but I’m probably being a bit over dramatic. I had such high hopes and plans for these 2 beauties, and I couldn’t save them despite my skill and knowledge. Helen especially – a sire I’ve wanted a daughter out of for many years, A/B casein, completely gorgeous… And, in losing these 2, I’ve lost more goats to unexpected illness/disease than I think I ever have – or at least not for the past 1.5 decades or so. The breeding program moves on, but I’ll be thinking of Helen and her dam… In hopes that I can have future animals of equal merit. Her necropsy results came back as Clostridium perfringens type A, but producing beta 2 toxin (new to me in ruminants). Not much info out there about it. Though Type A isn’t super well vaccinatable (a vaccine exists, but it sucks), everyone got ANOTHER CDT booster. (we are fully vaccinated here, but previously only performed yearly boosters. That will be changing).
