July 2026 – I bought a Sable! Thank you to the Fry family for making her available in a benefit auction for another wonderful person in the goating community.
It was apparently meant to be. This spring I lost 2 goats – and I never lose goats. Enterotoxemia took a fantastic doe and then several months later, her beautiful AI daughter. Both were a tremendous loss to my french alpine herd, as they were of superior depth of pedigree and quality and PRODUCTION, it will likely take a decade to recover. This benefit auction had a sable – not too far away in Indiana. About a 4.5 hr drive should I win – I’ve driven a LOT farther for goats before, so that didn’t spook me. I also just so happened to have a little bit of spending money with the extra work I’ve been doing. She stayed within my budget. And then I won! I let the seller know, thinking we’d arrange pickup soon… and they messaged back that evening saying they’d be visiting a friend just 1.5hr away the NEXT DAY. Which, I happened to have off! It just all worked out perfectly.
She is currently in biosecurity isolation, awaiting her CAE/Johnes testing before she can live with my kiddos her age. Born early Feb, she is already 6 mon old and can be tested – though she comes from a herd CAE neg and raised on CAE prevention. Source herd hasn’t had CL either. Johnes status unknown but we will test routinely like normal. She is a growthy girl, about the same size as my doe kids (who are a month younger, they’re massive). She should make breeding size this fall yet. I am currently arranging for semen for a lap AI with Sable semen! Failing that, she will be bred to one of my French alpine buck kids for exciting experimentals.
